Part 3: This post!
It makes me nervous when my skirt waist is a liiiittle bit too big.
It appears fine, but as soon as I start dancing….the waist starts to shift down.
But I don’t want to make the waist too tight, because that would create a muffin top! 🙁
This is a common problem with straight skirts and mermaid skirts that are fitted around the waist and the hips.
So in this video, you’ll see 2 easy fixes for this problem. Let’s get started!

2 Easy Fixes for Loose Skirts
1. Take in from the seams
Usually belly dance skirts are made from 2 or more panels. So turn your skirt inside out, and locate the seams, preferably the side ones for a seamless fix. Mark how much you want to take in, and draw lines to meet the side seams at around hip line or the widest part of the skirt, which is about 10-15cm (4-6in) below. And simply sew along those lines.
If your skirt has no side seams, do the same on the back side of the skirt by making darts or in other words, folding the top edge of your skirt towards the hip line.
2. Add elastic at the back
Another quick fix is adding elastic, but don’t worry, you won’t have to make any elastic casing and all that.
Basically, take a piece of elastic, and stitch it onto the back part of your skirt. This is a technique used by many costume designers, and it’s way better than making an elastic casing and adding elastic all around the waist, because doing so makes the waist too tight and causes a muffin top. But if you just add elastic at the back, it makes the waist of your skirt nice and snug and just right. 🙂
You can see how to do this more in detail in this tutorial.
Now your skirt should be nice and snug. 🙂
