DIY Banner / Garland for Dancers

Looking for new decorations for a hafla?

Or an inexpensive and inspiring way to decorate your dance space?

Recently I see so many beautiful DIY banners and garlands on Pinterest, made with scrap cotton fabric or burlap. I thought – well, I have lots of shiny fabric so I can make one that is inspired by sparkly dancers!

So in this video, you will see how to make this banner which you can use to decorate your dance space or use as a backdrop at events or dance photography.

To make your own banner, you need:    

Scrap fabric – pick fun, shiny fabric from your previous costume making projects. You can pretty much use any fabric. I used stretch fabric because it doesn’t fray.

Trims (optional) – I’m using tassels from last week’s post.

String – I’m using jute string from a dollar store.

Cutting tool – I’m using my trusty rotary cutter, which makes cutting faster, but of course you can use regular scissors as well.      

How to Make Your own Banner

First, fold your fabric in half. If it’s long, you can fold it one more time. Cut your fabric about 4 cm or 1.5 in wide strips. The lengths of my strips are pretty random, about 80cm-1m, but feel free to make them longer, shorter or all the same.    

Then take your string, I am using about 3m of jute string and tie a knot at the middle point, so I have a loop to hang this banner, and the string is doubled. You can use whatever length you’d like for your decoration.    

Take a strip of fabric, hold the middle part of the strip, slip it under the string, bring it over and take the rest of the strip through the loop. Tighten the knot.    

Take another one, and repeat it. Keep doing this until you fill up the string.    

I added the tassels from last week to the banner randomly to make it look more fun!    

It’s a fun and easy project, and cleans up your scrap fabric. The banner is a very cute decoration on windows or walls for your dance space or dance studio. Be creative, and have fun!
